A spokesperson for the British Humanist Association said, “The notion that it was the atheism of Nazis that led to their extremist and hateful views or that somehow fuels intolerance in Britain today is a terrible libel against those who do not believe in God.”
Belief or no belief, religious issues always raise the emotional temperature. Religious discrimination employment tribunal cases have barely been out of the press during the past year. Only about 1,000 of the 236,000 employment tribunal cases brought from April 2009 to April 2010 included religious discrimination claims, but there has been substantial media coverage. To date they have all been decided in favour of the employer.
The most recent ruling involved committed Christian, Duke Amachree, who was dismissed from his job after suggesting to a terminally-ill woman that she “put her faith in God”. The tribunal found it was reasonable for Wandsworth Council to dismiss Mr Amachree for gross misconduct and found the council had not discriminated against him on the basis of his religion.
Then there was the case of Christian registrar Lillian Ladele, who was dismissed by Islington Council after she refused to conduct civil ceremonies when they were introduced in 2005, because she felt they breached her faith. In March, Ms Ladele was refused the right to appeal. The courts ruled it was fair of the council to dismiss her because it had a duty to provide non-discriminatory services.
A final example involved Gary McFarlane, a counsellor for Relate Avon, who refused to commit to provide psycho-sexual counselling to same-sex couples based on his Christian beliefs that same-sex sexual activity was sinful and that he should not endorse it. Relate offers its services to both same-sex couples and heterosexual couples and the Employment Appeal tribunal found that Mr McFralane had not suffered discrimination on the grounds of his Christian belief.
The key factor in employees losing these cases is that the court has found that the employer usually has a good reason that justifies its actions. Examples of justification for what might otherwise be discriminatory treatment might be: providing a discrimination-free service to users (a counsellor refusing to counsel same-sex couples): an employee becoming seriously hindered in doing his job (a teacher requiring a veil where communication is key to the job) and; it being unlawful to discriminate in the provision of services to the public (a registrar who refused to conduct civil partnership ceremonies). As long as employers have strong justification for their actions, have properly thought matters through and done what they can to accommodate an employee, they will have a reasonable case.

On more than one occasion you’ve heard me talk about the deterioration of social skills in the work place, primarily due to the heightened influence of technology. It is not uncommon to find people who have basic problems interacting with customers, vendors, or fellow employees. This fundamental flaw has an adverse effect on teamwork, customer service, and sales.
I recently had a reader call me to task on this and asked what kind of curriculum I would recommend to teach proper social skills to younger workers entering the work force. From my perspective, I can think of three prime areas to concentrate on:
* Communications – both written and oral. It’s not simply a matter of mastering the media to be used, but more importantly, the content. Text messaging and the Internet has basically destroyed civil discourse and how to write an effective business letter which, of course, is critical for customer service and sales. Beyond this, people need simple speaking skills, such as how to engage in conversation, the proper way of performing an introduction, how to make a presentation or conduct a meeting. This includes lessons in persuasion, negotiation, and rhetorical thought. In addition to writing and speaking, listening is equally important, after all, it takes two to Tango.
* Ethics – dictates our value system, and is a little more than what is right and what is wrong. It also includes respect for others as well as yourself (a “Do unto others…” philosophy). Ethics plays a significant role in terms of teaching such things as self-worth, dedication, integrity, ambition, and the value of a dollar. Ethics is an expression of the expected code of conduct for everyone to adhere to and abide by.
* Common Courtesy – represents basic manners and how to interact with others. It’s a little more than “please” and “thank you”, but that’s not a bad place to start. It includes how to invite someone to participate in something, how to thank someone for a service performed, and how to include others and make them feel welcome. This also includes how to dress, personal appearances, how to act and conduct themselves with others (“right” versus “wrong”), etiquette and protocol, even the importance of being punctual.
Come to think of it, isn’t this what parents are supposed to be teaching their children? Unfortunately, our youth are learning their socialization skills more from Hollywood, video games, and the Internet, as opposed to their parents, which, unfortunately, is doing a lousy job of raising our kids. Instead, I recommend some simple courses to teach these socialization skills, either as a group or, preferably, some one-on-one coaching such as in a mentoring program (of which I’m a big believer). And for God’s sake, don’t give them a DVD or video on this, have a human-being talk to them instead!

Thirty percent adults who are working or looking for work, have dipped in to their own pockets during the recession to pay to learn new skills in their own time to help them get new jobs or keep their current one. The survey, part of an annual study into the various key elements of the world of work, also found that the 35-44 age range (38%) and 18-24 year olds (34%) were most likely to self fund skills development to make their job or prospects more secure. Regionally, workers in Scotland (36%) were most likely to pay to gain new recession-busting skills, followed by the Midlands at 33%, the North, South West and Wales at 30% and the South East least at 26%.
